Film Friday: “Daddy’s Little Girl Ain’t A Girl No More” / Torontoist

“We managed to see Cloverfield a few weeks ago, and with the release of Diary of the Dead this week, we have to say it’s rather timely to discuss our opinion of it. As tired as this quote is, there’s really no better way to describe Cloverfield than to take from Macbeth’s famous soliloquy: ‘Full […]

Film Friday: “Malcolm Jamal-Warner’s Rastafarian Rap Battle” / Torontoist

“Hello, and welcome to another installment of everyone’s favourite film column in which the writer makes up their opinions on the weeks films largely based on what trailers they’ve seen on TV.”
This is completely unrelated, but I can’t stop listening to Dethklok’s Dethalbum. It may be the best metal album I’ve ever heard, and I’m […]

Film Friday: “The Future Is Unwritten” / Torontoist

“It’s wild outside, huh? So wild that it allows us to segue into talking about Strange Wilderness first, for some reason. It surprises us that the last Happy Madison film that we saw was (the quite sweet, really) 50 First Dates. Strange Wilderness is only of interest to us because it has quite possibly the […]

Film Friday: “We Liked His Son Better, Really” / Torontoist

“So, who else remembers that Rambo III was about Rambo going to Afghanistan to help the Taliban, huh? We do (and apparently the Sun’s Jim Slotek does too). It’s rather a shame that Sylvester Stallone hasn’t seen fit to continue from that point and deal with the consequences of the conflict, instead jumping straight to […]

Film Friday: “Films!” / Torontoist

“Films! Films films films films. Sometimes it’s hard to get this column started, so we just sit in front of a blank word document and type the word “films” until it doesn’t make any sense to us any more. But by then, we’ve got started typing, at least, and so we continue.”

Usually I would delete […]

Film Friday: “In The Name Of The Shah” / Torontoist

“It’s simply a very lovely film, telling Marjane Satrapi’s story in a pleasant, anecdotal style while a portrait of Iran’s turbulent history reveals itself in the background. It’s well worth going to see, and they’ve kept the excellent original French-language voice acting, so that’s another bonus.”
(I’m talking about Persepolis.)

Film Friday: “There Will Be Hype” / Torontoist

“If you were lucky enough to win tickets to the screening of There Will Be Blood last night you will have already made your mind up about the film (well, we hope), but we’re going to subject you to our opinion of it anyway.”

My opinion: There Will Be Blood is quite good.

Film Friday: “Kitsch The Bucket” / Torontoist

“For those of you who want to see something specifically related to Christmas, the Revue has come to your rescue with the help of Dion Conflict, who will be showing Christmas Kitsch-A-Roo at 9:30 p.m. If you’re familiar with Dion Conflict’s Hunk-A-Junk screenings, you’ll know what to expect—a variety of utterly bizarre found shorts—but they’re […]

Film Friday: “Big Willie Style” / Torontoist

“We were kind of pumped for I Am Legend, but then Eye’s Adam Nayman informed us that it ‘omits the novel’s key twist.’ So, uh, it’s completely pointless then. The only save we can imagine is if it ends with a ‘Big Willie Style’ rap at the end. It probably doesn’t, though.”
I Am Legend is […]

Film Friday: “Super Furry Animals” / Torontoist

“The Golden Compass also opens, if you want to turn your kids (and possibly yourself) into evil atheist monsters. But hell, if being an atheist gets you an armoured polar bear to command, it can’t be all bad. Wait a minute…these atheists and their armoured polar bears will kill us all!”
I discuss King of Kong […]
